Cardinals Drop Series Opener to Braves, 7-6, Despite Late Push (St Louis Cardinals)

The St. Louis Cardinals fell 7-6 to the Atlanta Braves in the series opener Monday night at Truist Park, dropping to 1-10 on the road and 0-5 in one-run games this season.

Scoring Summary

2nd Inning – Cardinals 2, Braves 0 

Nolan Gorman doubled to center, then scored on a single by Pedro Pagés that resulted in a throwing error by Matt Olson. Pagés advanced to third on the play and later scored on a Victor Scott II RBI single.

3rd Inning – Tied 2-2 

Alex Verdugo walked, and Austin Riley followed with a two-run homer to left field, tying the game.

6th Inning – Cardinals 3, Braves 2 

Nolan Arenado led off with a double and Jordan Walker reached on an error. Gorman drove in Arenado with a single to right.

8th Inning – Braves 7, Cardinals 3 

Phil Maton entered in relief and gave up a single to Riley and a walk to Ozuna. Olson’s RBI single tied the game, and after JoJo Romero took over, Michael Harris II added a sac fly and Sean Murphy launched a three-run homer to left.

9th Inning – Braves 7, Cardinals 6 

Back-to-back doubles by Pagés and Scott II brought in a run, followed by a two-run blast from Willson Contreras. 

But with the tying run on base, Arenado grounded out to the catcher in a strange final play to end the game.

Game Notes

The Cardinals have now allowed 4+ runs in a single inning eight times this season.

Monday’s game marked their fifth straight loss and continued their rough road start at 1-10.

Oli Marmol was ejected in the eighth inning for the first time this season.

Braves ML (-205) cashed and the total went OVER 8.5 (-115).

Game 2 of the series is Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. CT. Andre Pallante is scheduled to start for the Cardinals. Spencer Strider was originally slated for Atlanta but was placed on the IL with a hamstring injury.
