The United Football League (UFL) has announced several rule changes for the upcoming 2025 season, aiming to enhance the game's excitement and pace. These modifications focus on kickoffs, coaches' challenges, and onside kicks.

New Kickoff Formation

The UFL will implement a new kickoff formation, blending elements from the XFL's 2023 season and the NFL's 2024 Dynamic Kickoff. Key changes include:

  • Kickoff Position: Kickoffs will now commence from the 30-yard line, a shift from the previous 20-yard line start.
  • Kicking Team Alignment: Apart from the kicker, the remaining ten players on the kicking team will line up at the receiving team's 40-yard line. Previously, all kicking team players, including the kicker, were positioned at the 20-yard line.
  • Receiving Team Setup Zone: This zone now extends from the receiving team's 35-yard line to the 30-yard line, requiring at least nine players within this area. Last season, the setup zone was between the kicking team's 30- and 40-yard lines, with a mandate of eight to nine players.
  • Landing Zone: The designated area for the ball to land is now between the receiving team's 20-yard line and the goal line.
  • Kick Requirements: The kickoff must reach the landing zone; failure to do so results in the ball being placed at the 40-yard line.
  • Touchback Spots: Two distinct touchback placements have been established: kicks entering the end zone will be spotted at the 35-yard line, while those that hit within the landing zone before entering the end zone will be placed at the 20-yard line. Previously, all touchbacks were placed at the 25-yard line.

Head Coach's Challenge

The UFL has expanded the scope of the Head Coach's Challenge:

  • Additional Challenge: Head coaches will now receive a second challenge if their initial challenge is successful.
  • Challenge Scope: Coaches can challenge any officiating decision, provided their team has a remaining timeout.

Onside Kicks

Traditional onside kicks have been eliminated. To retain possession after a score, teams can now opt for a fourth down and 12-yard scrimmage play from their own 28-yard line.

2025 Season Kickoff

The 2025 UFL season is set to begin on Friday, March 28, at 8 p.m. ET. FOX Sports will introduce "FOX UFL Friday," a dedicated night for UFL action throughout the 10-week regular season. The inaugural game will feature the St. Louis Battlehawks against the Houston Roughnecks. The season will culminate on Saturday, June 14, with the 2025 UFL Championship Game broadcasted on ABC.

These rule changes and the upcoming season's schedule reflect the UFL's commitment to delivering a dynamic and engaging football experience for fans and players alike.
