CITY’s Season Opener
St. Louis CITY SC begins their third season as an MLS club when they host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night at Energizer Park. The game marks the regular season debut of new CITY head coach Olof Mellberg.
Optimism Abounds For CITY
Good vibes are surrounding this CITY club after a successful preseason that generated three wins, two draws, and just one loss in their six games.
This should be a deeper, more mature team than last season, in addition to being more disciplined defensively and more creative offensively.
CITY should also be confident having gotten out of the blocks well in each of their first two seasons. They famously got off to a 5-0 start in their inaugural campaign. And even in a down season last year, CITY was unbeaten in their first seven home games across all competitions.
Sandwich Spot For Colorado
This is a tough sandwich spot for Colorado here early in the season.
The Rapids are playing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup and earned a 2-1 win over LAFC this past Tuesday. Now they travel to St. Louis for this game before flying back west for the second leg with LAFC this coming Tuesday.
My Lean
I won’t be betting this game because I don’t like the unknown of a season opener. But I think this is an ideal opportunity for CITY to start their season with a win against a team with a busy early schedule. The Rapids have also lost each of their last three MLS openers by a combined score of 11-1.
