Aug 13, 2024; Los Angeles, California, USA; St. Louis CITY SC midfielder Indiana Vassilev (19) reacts after scoring a goal against Club America in the second half at Dignity Health Sports Park

UPDATE: The transaction has officially gone through, with St. Louis CITY SC recieving $400,000 GAM in 2025, $600,000 GAM in 2026, and up to $250,000 in additional performance based incentives in return for Indiana Vassilev.

As reported by Tom Bogert, St. Louis CITY SC are set to trade midfielder Indiana Vassilev to Philadelphia Union in a deal involving $1 millon in General Allocation Money (GAM), plus $200k in add-ons, which are likely performance based.

Taylor Twellman further reports that Vassilev had expressed that he no longer wished to remain in St. Louis to his teammates. The deal is allegedly agreed upon by Vassilev, but details still being finalized in the office. Vassilev would reunite with former CITY head coach Bradley Carnell, now head caoch at the Union, whose system well fits his play style and attributes.

This is what many in the business, particularly Eli Lesser, call a "bombazo."

It always hurts when you see a fan favorite leave, but let’s make a few things clear.

1.) Vassilev just turned 24. His contract (270k/yr) expires at the end of the year, and he needs playing time to earn his next one. It’s time to be a starter in MLS if he wants to go overseas and get more USMNT apps. He wouldn’t do that here unless Hartel got injured. This move makes sense for his career.
2.) If a player doesn’t want to be where they’re at, their performance will decline and it can hurt the locker room. No matter how much the boys love Uncle Indy, this may be a necessary change.
3.) Vassilev is worth €2 million. It had to be a mammoth from Philly to get this deal done. Since Vassilev’s contract is expiring, this is prime time to get money for him rather than letting him walk on a free transfer next December.

Vassilev is a favorite of many fans, and his mustache will forever be a part of the crest and CITY’s inaugural campaign--but, business is business. Tough decisions have to be made at times, and this one just so happens to work out pretty nicely for St. Louis.

Lutz could in turn give preseason trialist Alfredo Morales (35) a cheap, 1 year deal, then use the GAM haul to make a blockbuster MLS trade or move pieces around for higher quality depth. Having extra GAM to work with is always particularly useful.

I am not thrilled about the return, but it is not low enough for me to really complain either. Cash would have been a better option, unless sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel has a particular reason to stock up on GAM...

Kudos to Lutz for finding a way to turn an unfortunate moment into a victory for the front office; a common theme in his regime. While fans may be bummed and Vassilev will certainly be missed, one thing is certain in my eyes: this is probably the right decision for both parties.
